Heaven's Treasures Quilt Square Instructions

Below are detailed instructions for assembly of the quilt square, along with pictures.

While the sequence seems long, it is only because I have given you step-by-step instructions.

These squares go together very quickly!

All of the angel designs using the quilt template are sewn in the same way

On-line orders come with instructions that do not include pictures, but you may print these instructions directly from this page for on-line orders. CD packages include a large PDF file with pictures and instructions, as well as a Word file without pictures. Pictures are not included for the angels without the template or the Quilt Template design. You can refer to these pictures since the angels and quilt templates are all sewn out in the same way.

The sashing for one square requires a strip of fabric 2-3/4" X 42". Most fabrics will come at least 42" wide. You will need two pieces cut to a 6" length and 2 pieces cut to 10". Finished square will be 8-1/2" and sew to 8" square when a 1/4" seam is used to finish a quilt.

For each square, a back ground appliqué center 6" square is required.
1. Embroider the Center Square Placement Line. Use any color thread as it will not show.

Position the background square fabric (6" square) over the placement line, covering the placement line completely.

2. Embroider the Tack Down Line. Hold the fabric in place as you sew or use a machine embroidery spray adhesive to hold in place.

3. Embroider the Words - Use thread color of choice . Omit this step if you are sewing angels without words.
4. Embroider the Wings & Feet - Use a complimentary thread color to match the fabric used.
5. Embroider the Dress Placement Line Thread will be covered. Use any color desired.
Position a scrap (about 3" square) of dress appliqué fabric over the placement line, covering the placement line completely. I used the same fabric for the dress as for the sashing.

6. Embroider the Dress Tack Down Line. Hold the fabric in place as you sew or use a machine embroidery spray adhesive to hold in place.

Trim as close to the tack down stitching as possible. If necessary, remove your hoop from the machine to trim and then replace the hoop on the machine.

7. Embroider the Face and Hands - Pale Peach or flesh tone of choice
8. Embroider the Cheeks - Peach or cheek tone of choice
9. Embroider the Hair - Use hair thread color of choice
10. Embroider the Outline Details - Dark Brown or Black
11. Embroider the Dress Cover Stitching. Use a color to compliment fabric used.
12. Embroider Collar, Cuffs and Skirt Edging - White or color of choice.

Trim off excess fabric from around edges of square as close to possible to stitching.
Now you are ready to attach the sashing. Use thread color to match fabric. You may use regular sewing thread here for stronger seams, if desired.

13. Embroider the Top Sashing Placement Line

Lay one 6" piece of sashing along the placement line, right side down and the edge along top edge of square, as shown. Side edges of the sashing piece should extend beyond the edges of the sewn square.
4. Embroider the Top Seam. Hold in place as seam sews.

Seam should look like this picture.

Turn back the top sashing piece and finger press. I find pulling up slightly on the sashing piece and gently running my fingernail along the edge works well.

For some people, you may want to remove the hoop and place on a table to give good support behind the hoop if you are worried about pressing too hard on the hoop while in the machine.

15. Embroider the Bottom Sashing Placement Line

Lay second 6" piece of sashing along the placement line, right side down and the edge along bottom edge of square, as shown. Side edges of the sashing piece should extend beyond the edges of the sewn square.

16. Embroider the Bottom Seam. Hold in place as seam sews.

Turn back the bottom sashing piece and finger press as you did for the top piece.

17. Stitch the Left Sashing Placement Line. Gently hold the bottom sashing piece flat and then the top shashing piece flat as this seam sews. Seam sews from bottom to top.

Note the sashing side edges extend beyond the square. Trim off the extra fabric from top and bottom sashing along the placement stitching line.
Lay one 10" piece of sashing along the left sashing placement line, right side down and along the left sashing placement line as shown. The 10" sashing piece should extend beyond the edges of the top and bottom sashing.

18. Embroider the Left Sashing Seam Line. Hold in place as seam sews.

Turn back the left side sashing piece and finger press.

Now repeat for the Right Sashing. It is sewn exactly the same way as the left side.

This is how your square should look before you sew blanket stitching around the inside perimeter of the center square.

19. Embroider the Right Sashing Placement Line. Hold the top and bottom sashing pieces flat as this stitching line sews. Seam sews from bottom to top.

Trim off the extra side fabric from top and bottom sashing which extends over the side of the placement line. Trim along placement stitching line.

Lay second 10" piece of sashing along the right sashing placement line, right side down and the edge along the right sashing placement line. Side edges of the 10" sashing piece should extend beyond the edges of the top and bottom sashing.

20. Embroider the Right Sashing Seam. Hold in place as seam sews.

Turn back the top sashing piece and finger press as you did for the top piece. Your square should look like this. You will cut off the excess fabric when you remove the square from the hoop.
21. Embroider the Blanket Stitch around inside edge of sashing. Use thread color to compliment and/or contrast fabric.

Remove from hoop.

Press the square, starting in the center of square and moving iron outward for a nice square.

Trim off excess fabric at top and bottom of square so edges are even.

Tear away wash-away stabilizer under sashing area of square. Be careful where seams connect so you do not tear the seam open. Just gently hold the seam edge as you tear.

Press again. Square is complete.
Word Squares How To

All word squares sew out in the same sequence. Use thread colors of your choice.

1. Border
2. Scrollwork
3. Words and Hearts where hearts are part of the design.

1. Hoop wash-away stabilizer in large 5x7 hoop.

2. Position an oversized piece of fabric on top of hoop. It is not necessary to hoop the fabric, only the stabilizer. Center the fabric over the hoop. I used an 11" square.

3. Embroider design as listed above.

Remove hoop from machine and fabric square from hoop. Press.

7. Trim square to desired size. To match sashed squares, cut to 8-1/2" square.
